WHAT IS DIABETES?

Your body uses sugar called glucose for energy.

Glucose comes from food, particularly from starchy and sugary food. It is a carbohydrate.

Digestion turns sugar and starch into glucose which goes into your blood.

The pancreas is a gland in your body which makes insulin.

Insulin allows glucose in your blood to move into your muscles where it can be used to make energy.
Without insulin your body cannot use the glucose so it stays in your blood.

When you have diabetes you do not make enough insulin. That is why your blood glucose is high.
(Blood glucose and blood sugar are the same thing.)
