TRAVEL AND ID

Travel safely and do not forget to take your diabetes!
Remember that holidays are supposed to be fun, but plan ahead and be prepared for unexpected problems like time delays, weather changes, and illness.

Before you go things to remember: -

  • Have I had any vaccinations needed for where I am going?
  • Do I have medical insurance (covering my diabetes as well)?
  • Do I have any special medical forms needed for where I am going? (E.G – E111- available from the post office).
  • Have I stocked up on all my diabetes supplies? (including a small sharps box or BD safe clip).
  • Do I have a travel medical letter from my diabetes team?
  • Have I some form of identification? (EG-medic alert or ID card).
  • Have I some food supplies for hypos and snacks? (in case they are needed for the journey or holiday).
  • Have I a cool bag or Frio pack? (as required).
Have I planned any insulin changes needed with my diabetes team?
  • It may be worth the airline being contacted before you travel to inform them that your child has diabetes, and will be carrying needles and other supplies.

The Day Of Travelling: -

  • Take extra supplies (in case of an emergency) and store all supplies in the hand luggage. Divide between x2 people if possible. REMEMBER insulin may freeze in the hold of the plane.
  • Follow your diabetes plan for travelling (EG – insulin changes).
  • Be aware of time delays and make changes as needed.
  • If considering taking your mobile away, remember that you can always contact your Diabetes Team for any advice (as necessary).

Enjoy your holiday, but do not forget: -

  • Warmer weather, exercise, excitement can speed up the effects of insulin. Extra snacks and / or reductions in insulin doses may be needed.
  • Remember to use high sun factor creams / lotions and apply regularly.
  • Drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration.
  • Be prepared to manage illness and SEEK MEDICAL ADVICE if needed.
