ABOUT US

Butterflies are a small group of children and their parents with a common interest in the disease type 1 Diabetes. It was started by the parents, to bring together families for support.

We have carried on this group because it is important to learn about Diabetes to keep our children well, and to know that they are not alone. The children often do not know anyone else with Diabetes and feel like it is only them with the disease and when they see someone else injecting and finger testing become friends very quickly.

The activities we organise are there for fun, exercise and friendship. We have been bowling, walking/picnic, ceramic painting, Swimming and Donuting.

The Information talks are for information about the care and well being of our children, they are usually in the evening, which vary. The talks are carried out by the qualified medical team that takes care of our children on a daily basis, they give their time voluntarily.

I am Cheryl Commans and I have been coming to the group for a couple of years, I came to the meetings with another Mum that had a boy that was diagnosed at the same time. We always go along to everything that we can and have had a good time each and every time.

Butterflies always welcomes new members, (if you are new please fill in a family record sheet in Contact Us). Helpers are needed too, as this is a group of volunteers, new ideas and enthusiasm is essential as there is no magic to coping with the disease but with time and lots of help and friends, it will be easier.

The children enjoy the activities and once they know a friendly face love coming along to everything.
